Seasonal Equipment

Scratch and dent snowthrowers

Snowthrowers are seasonal: prices drop late in the winter and in the off-season, when stores clear floor models and units with scuffed housings or bent chutes.

Single-stage or two-stage

Single-stage machines use one auger that both picks up the snow and throws it. They are light, simple and best for paved driveways with up to about 8 inches of snow.

Two-stage machines use an auger to feed an impeller that throws the snow. They handle deep, wet and plowed snow and gravel driveways, because the auger does not touch the ground.

What to check on a floor model

  • Check the chute and the deflector for cracks, and turn the chute through its full range.
  • Spin the auger by hand with the engine off and the spark plug disconnected. It should turn without binding.
  • Ask whether the unit has been run. A machine that held fuel needs a fresh oil change and clean fuel before winter.
