Rebates
An outlet discount is only part of the saving. Rebates for efficient appliances and for recycling an old one can apply to a scratch and dent unit too, because it is a new appliance.
Where rebates come from
- Manufacturers run seasonal mail-in rebates, often on refrigerators, laundry pairs and kitchen packages bought together.
- Utilities offer rebates on ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators, washers, dryers and dishwashers, and sometimes pay you to recycle an old second refrigerator or freezer.
- State and federal programs have funded appliance swap-out rebates for replacing old, inefficient units.
How to find current offers
The ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder lists programs by ZIP code. Your electric or gas utility’s website usually has an “efficiency” or “rebates” section too.
Before you buy
- Check that the exact model number is ENERGY STAR certified. Older outlet models may not meet the current standard.
- Keep the dated receipt with the model and serial number. Most rebates need both.
- Ask whether the store’s outlet pricing can be combined with manufacturer rebates. Some promotions exclude open-box units.
